A great candle is an investment. And like any investment, how you care for it determines what you get back.
Most people burn candles without a second thought — and most people are leaving performance, longevity, and scent quality on the table as a result. A few simple habits, applied consistently, can double the life of a candle and dramatically improve the experience of burning it.
This is everything you need to know.
The First Burn Is the Most Important
The first time you light a candle sets the memory of the wax. Candle wax has a burn memory — it will only melt as wide as it did on the first burn, every time after.
If you extinguish a candle before the melt pool reaches the edges of the container, you create a tunnel: a narrow channel down the center of the candle that deepens with each burn, leaving wax on the sides that will never melt. This wastes a significant portion of the candle and reduces scent throw.
The rule: On the first burn, allow the candle to burn until the melt pool reaches the full diameter of the container. For most candles, this takes 2–4 hours. Do not extinguish it before then.
Trim the Wick Before Every Burn
A long wick produces a large, unstable flame that burns hotter than necessary, consumes wax too quickly, and produces soot. It also causes the candle to smoke and can leave black marks on the inside of the container.
Before every burn — including the first — trim the wick to approximately 5mm. Use a wick trimmer, small scissors, or simply pinch off the charred tip with your fingers once the wax has fully cooled.
A trimmed wick produces a smaller, cleaner flame that burns more slowly and evenly, extends the life of the candle, and delivers a cleaner, more consistent scent throw.
Burn Time: The Sweet Spot
Every burn session has an optimal window. Too short, and you don't allow the melt pool to fully develop. Too long, and the wick begins to move, the flame grows unstable, and the container can overheat.
The ideal burn time is 2–4 hours per session. After 4 hours, extinguish the candle, allow it to cool completely, trim the wick, and relight for the next session.
Never burn a candle for more than 4 hours at a time.
How to Extinguish a Candle Properly
Blowing out a candle sends a plume of smoke into the room and can disturb the wax surface, creating an uneven pool for the next burn.
Use a candle snuffer instead — it extinguishes the flame without smoke or wax disturbance. If you don't have a snuffer, dip the wick into the melt pool using a wick dipper or a toothpick, then straighten it. This extinguishes the flame cleanly and coats the wick in wax, making it easier to light next time.
Storage and Environment
How you store a candle between burns affects both its appearance and its fragrance.
- Keep candles away from direct sunlight — UV light degrades fragrance oils and can cause discoloration of the wax
- Store in a cool, dry place — heat softens wax and can cause the surface to sweat or the fragrance to dissipate
- Keep the lid on between burns to protect the wax surface from dust and to preserve the fragrance
- Burn on a heat-resistant surface — never directly on wood, glass, or any surface that could be damaged by heat
When to Stop Burning
Stop burning a candle when approximately 1cm of wax remains at the bottom of the container. Burning below this level can cause the container to overheat, crack, or scorch the surface beneath it.
At this point, the candle has given everything it has. Clean out the remaining wax (freeze the container for an hour to make removal easy), and repurpose the vessel — WRTH candle containers are designed to be kept.
